Many people assume that Asbestos exposure is something that only occurs in an industrial workplace. Unfortunately, many hundreds of
consumer products contain Asbestos. These consumer products have been manufactured and sold with Asbestos in them and many of these products are used in the home.
Some people are "handy," and will tackle home renovation projects themselves rather than calling in a contractor or electrician. Unfortunately, for many years, Asbestos was often present in the construction products that consumers used to renovate their homes. These Asbestos-containing consumer products include: joint compound, cement, floor and ceiling tiles, paint, insulated wire and other electrical products. The use of these products often caused a significant amount of Asbestos dust and fibers to be released into the environment, causing exposure to Asbestos, which can result in mesothelioma and other Asbestos-related diseases. For example, it is common for people to sand joint compound after it is applied. This sanding causes hazardous Asbestos fibers to get into the air where these fibers can be inhaled into the lungs.
Asbestos is the only known cause of mesothelioma, a virulent form of cancer that occurs mainly in the lining of the lungs and the stomach.
Mesothelioma clinical symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, loss of appetite or weight, and chest or pleural pain (such as experienced with pleuritis-fluid in the lungs). Asbestos can also cause lung cancer, Asbestosis, and other malignant diseases. Clinical symptoms associated with mesothelioma and these other malignant diseases are often subtle, and don't appear until the later stages of the disease.
The
New York City personal injury lawyers of Levy Phillips & Konigsberg ("LPK") have filed and litigated many mesothelioma lawsuits involving exposures to
Asbestos in consumer products that have occurred during home renovation and construction.
LPK has offices in New York and New Jersey and is actively involved in Asbestos litigation in both states. LPK's mesothelioma practice focuses on the direct representation of mesothelioma victims residing in New York or New Jersey as well as mesothelioma victims who were exposed to Asbestos in New York or New Jersey and now live in other states across the country.
