Many people assume that Asbestos exposure, and the hazards to health from exposure, is something that only occurs in an industrial workplace. Unfortunately, hundreds of Asbestos-containing products were manufactured for the purpose of use in the home. One such product was joint compound, which was used to seal cracks and joints in wallboard materials. Joint compounds were commonly mixed before use, and sanded down after application. Both of these processes caused the release of dangerous amounts of Asbestos fibers that can result in the Asbestos diseases, mesothelioma and other
Asbestos hazards to health. Asbestos is the only known cause of mesothelioma, a virulent form of cancer that occurs mainly in the lining of the lungs and stomach. Asbestos health hazards can also include lung cancer, Asbestosis, and other malignant Asbestos diseases.
Companies continued to manufacture and sell Asbestos-containing joint compound often without warning their customers even after their own industry study, Evaluation of Exposure to Asbestos During Mixing and Sanding of Joint Compounds, Gypsum Association (1973)), concluded that sanding and mixing joint compound could release large amounts of Asbestos fibers in excess of OSHA levels. Many companies simply ignored the study's conclusion that, the most effective means of eliminating the Asbestos problem obviously would be to eliminate Asbestos from the joint compound formulations, thus reducing Asbestos hazards to health....
A number of
Asbestos exposure lawsuits have been filed and litigated by New York and New Jersey mesothelioma lawyers Levy Phillips & Konigsberg ("LPK"). These Asbestos exposure lawsuits involve exposure to Asbestos that occurred during home renovation and construction.
