Mesothelioma attorneys from New York and New Jersey law firm, Levy, Phillips & Konigsberg, LLP, have filed lawsuits on behalf of New York mesothelioma victims. Many of these victims were exposed to Asbestos while working as shipyard workers and since have developed mesothelioma. Brooklyn Navy Yard was the location of the construction of the U.S.S. Iowa (BB-61) where widespread Asbestos exposure occurred.
According to the Asbestos, mesothelioma legal information gathered by the attorneys at LPK, between Junes, 1940, when the keel was laid, and February, 1943, when the Iowa was commissioned work never stopped on this the first of a new "Fast" Fleet Battleship design. Working in cramped quarters, welders, electricians, sheet metal workers, carpenters, steamfitters, pipe-fitters, laggers, riggers, chipper/caulkers, boiler makers, and metal smiths, among others, were exposed to Asbestos in many forms. Asbestos gaskets and packing were used to seal pumps, steam lines, and all "hot" piping running throughout the ship.
The Iowa was powered by eight boilers and four double expansion steam turbines of such size and proportions that the ship was able to cruise at great speed. Asbestos was used to encase each of the boilers and steam turbines throughout the ship. Much of the ship's major wiring for its eight turbine generators was rigged with miles of Asbestos wiring. Almost no shipboard compartment was built without one form or another of Asbestos material. On a daily basis, Veterans who served aboard the U.S.S. Iowa from 1943 through the ship's 1st decommissioning, in 1958, were exposed to Asbestos.
Asbestos is the only known
cause of mesothelioma, a terminal form of cancer that occurs primarily in the lining of the lungs and abdomen. Even when exposure to Asbestos occurs for only a short duration, Asbestos can lead to mesothelioma. Typically mesothelioma occurs at least fifteen years after an individuals first exposure to Asbestos.
