Almost no shipboard compartment was built without one form or another of Asbestos material. On a daily basis, Veterans who served aboard the U.S.S. Iowa from 1943 through the ship's 1st decommissioning, in 1958, were exposed to Asbestos.
Asbestos is the only known
cause of mesothelioma, a terminal form of cancer that occurs primarily in the lining of the lungs and abdomen. Even when exposure to Asbestos occurs for only a short duration, Asbestos can lead to mesothelioma.
